Knee Pain: Why You Doing Exercises Doesn’t Always Ease Knee Pain.

“Paul… every time I mention my knee pain to my GP (3x now), she just tells me to do some exercises.

First time I went she just gave me a sheet with some pictures on and they weren’t terribly easy to follow.

6 months passed and I’ve seen no improvement.

I went back and a different GP referred to me to NHS Physio. But all I got was a phone call and the same kind of exercises, sent through the post, a few days later.

To cut a long story short, exercises don’t always work.

(Not like you think they do, anyways…)

And why not?

It’s actually a LOT like breaking out of a self fulfilling prophecy …

Herein, I’ll explain:

If you’re aged 45 +, or even just before, your knee joint has become worn and has stiffened up, and muscles have become weaker.

And it’s likely the exercises you’ve been given or are doing are ones that see you doing something like this:

“Sitting on a bed and pushing your knee down to straighten your leg and then doing another one which sees you lift your leg off that same bed and hold it in air, for about 10 seconds, 10 times per day…”

…Am I warm?

If I am, then that’s not a bad place to start.

The problem is that those exercises should be progressed and done along side ones that will improve the movement and strength of other vital parts of your body, as well.

And after a week of doing really simple leg exercises, they’ve got to be progressed according to your progress so that you’re doing ones which are more “functional”.

That means doing exercises that recreate what you’re actually going to be doing each day in your life… I.e moving up and down stairs, moving from a sitting to a standing position etc etc…

Because how many times in your life are you ever going to want to sit on a bed and push your knee into it, or off it?

Your knee is likely to be too swollen and too painful to let you do anything more basic than what the NHS Physios have given you.
